SAN ANGELO, TX — A suspect is in custody following a shooting late Wednesday in Tom Green County near Veribest that left one person in critical condition.
Gerardo Santos, 29, of San Angelo, was arrested early Thursday on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies responded about 7 p.m. Wednesday to a reported shooting in the Talon Lane area north of Veribest. Upon arrival, they found a gunshot victim suffering from multiple injuries. The victim was airlifted by Shannon Medical Center's AirMed to the hospital, where the person remained in critical condition Thursday morning.
The sheriff's office said the incident stemmed from a domestic-related disturbance. Santos allegedly arrived at the residence, confronted another male, and the situation escalated to gunfire. Santos fled before law enforcement arrived.
Deputies later located Santos' vehicle in the 1800 block of Koberlin Street. A search of the residence there by the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team and San Angelo Police Department SWAT turned up negative results.
At about 1:50 a.m. Thursday, new information led officers to Santos in the 100 block of South Chadbourne Street, where San Angelo police took him into custody without further incident.
Santos is being held at the Tom Green County Detention Center. The investigation remains active.
The sheriff's office thanked the San Angelo Police Department, San Angelo Fire Department and Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance.
