DPS Trooper Hospitalized, 1 Suspect Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting in Big Spring

 

BIG SPRING, TX — A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and hospitalized in stable condition, and one suspect was killed after an early morning officer-involved shooting in Big Spring on Monday, authorities said. 

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, which happened around 12:40 a.m. in the 500 block of Westover near the Westover Hills Apartments. 

According to DPS, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a violation. The driver failed to stop, prompting the trooper to perform a PIT maneuver. The vehicle veered into bushes, and two suspects fled on foot. 

During the foot pursuit, one suspect fired at the trooper, who returned fire. One suspect was killed, while the second remains at large. 

The trooper sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital in the Lubbock area, where they are listed in stable condition. 

The Big Spring Police Department and Howard County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation.
