SAN ANGELO, TX — A 17-year-old from San Angelo has been charged with murder in the death of a 16-year-old Wednesday.
Jacob Flores was taken into custody and has been booked into Tom Green County Jail.
The identity of the 16-year-old has not been released.
The incident, which occurred in the 1800 block of Childress Street, was initially believed to be a shooting, said Police Chief Travis Griffith.
By the time officers arrived on scene at about 4:16 p.m., the victim was suffering from traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"Officers and investigators quickly developed a suspect who had been initially contacted there on scene," Griffith said. "Over the course of the next several hours, overwhelming evidence was collected that indicated this early suspect was responsible for the murder of this victim. ... The early indication is the suspect was an associate of the victim."
Griffith said it doesn't appear the stabbing was related to the two drive-by shootings that occurred in San Angelo on Saturday afternoon and in the early-morning hours of Wednesday.
"I'm thankful for the hard work of the patrol officers that responded along with the criminal investigations division, our crime scene investigators and special operations unit, which houses the gang unit," Griffith said. "And again, I'm asking for prayers for the victim's family in this case."
