Suspect Involved in Standoff Charged with Second Robbery

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man who was arrested for robbing a cab driver has been charged with a second robbery.

On Monday, Michael Escobedo was arrested for aggravated robbery after he robbed a cab driver June 7, 2026. Additional information states that Escobedo robbed another cab driver on June 6. Escobedo was also involved in a police standoff on the north side of San Angelo on June 25.

According to court documents, on June 6, San Angelo police officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of North Chadbourne, regarding an aggravated robbery. Upon arrival, officers contacted the victim, who reported that the incident occurred inside his cab in the parking lot.

An investigator interviewed the victim and learned that at 5:18 a.m., the victim received a call at the Yellow Cab office which stated, “my brother needs a cab” and requested the pickup on the 4300 block of Bowie Street near the intersection of 44th Street. There, an individual identified as Escobedo waved at the cab driver to get his attention.

The victim said that he drove south on Bowie Street to 14th Street and turned west on 14th Street towards the Grande Motel. Upon arriving at the business, Escobedo asked the victim if he had change for a $100 bill. The victim confirmed and when Escobedo grabbed his wallet, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the victim’s head stating, “I’ll just take all that … or I’ll shoot you."

Escobedo then demanded the victim’s money, keys and phone. The victim complied and gave Escobedo all the cash from his cab fares, the keys to the cab, and his personal cell phone. Then, Escobedo ordered the victim to remain in the vehicle for five minutes before exiting through the rear passenger door before fleeing westbound on 12th Street.

The phone number which was used to order the cab was traced through San Angelo Police Department’s dispatch.

On June 7, the investigator was contacted by a detective when he learned that another aggravated robbery had taken place in the same area and in the same manner of operation.

The investigator learned from Escobedo’s sister that he was dating a girl who lived close to Bowie Street and 42nd Street and that he was staying with her there. Then, the investigator went to Bowie Street to canvas the area and observed a Ring camera on the residence. He contacted the occupant, Escobedo’s girlfriend, who stated he had been at the house but left that morning around 7:30 a.m.

The girlfriend stated that Escobedo told her he had robbed a taxi driver to pay bills. According to messages she observed, Escobedo obtained $400 from the first robbery and gave someone $200 for a ride. She then said Escobedo told her that this incident occurred Saturday morning.

Escobedo’s girlfriend then said his phone had been turned off because his grandfather did not pay the bill. She confirmed to the investigator that Escobedo’s phone number was disconnected on June 7. Then, the girlfriend stated that she and Escobedo had purchased a firearm together and she paid $120 to an individual named “Ghost” for her portion of the gun.

Then the detective was given consent by Escobedo’s girlfriend to enter the home and search for items used in both robberies. In the master bedroom’s closet on the top shelf, the investigator located a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun which matched the description that the victim provided.

Other clothing items were also collected as evidence from another location.

Escobedo was arrested on June 29 and is being held in the Tom Green County Jail on $100,000 bond.
