Trooper Shot as Gunfire Erupts in San Angelo Neigborhood

SAN ANGELO, TX —  A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and seriously injured Friday afternoon, but authorities have not yet said how the shooting occurred.

San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith said the trooper sustained a serious injury but is in stable condition. He described the incident as a “hectic moment” and said all suspects are in custody. Griffith also said one civilian was injured. He did not confirm whether the civilian’s injuries were caused by the trooper during the incident.

The shooting happened sometime after 4:30 p.m., according to Griffith.

Texas DPS spokesman Justin Baker said the Texas Rangers, a division of DPS, is taking over the investigation. This could point towards the trooper having sht the suspect during the hectic moment. Baker said his office will release more information as the investigation progresses.

At the time of the gunfire, radio reports indicated that multiple people were shot near the intersection of Culberson Street and Archer Street in San Angelo.

The San Angelo Police Department, the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and crime scene tape could be seen.
