ASU Appoints Gascoigne as Dean of College of Arts and Humanities

Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne, former graduate program chair in the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Nebraska Omaha, has been appointed dean of Angelo State University’s newly created College of Arts and Humanities, effective July 1^st, 2016. 

During her tenure at UNO, Gascoigne served as acting assistant vice chancellor for academic and student affairs from 2011-2012. She was chair of the Department of Foreign Languages for nine years and earned the Peter Kiewit Professorship for five years. Gascoigne joined the UNO faculty in 1997. She has published 65 articles in refereed journals, five books and 44 papers that were presented in professional conference proceedings.

In announcing the appointment, ASU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Topliff said, “Dr. Gascoigne’s vast experience with assessment, faculty and program review, strategic planning, curriculum development and student retention will benefit ASU tremendously. She has studied student persistence and compared student learning outcomes in hybrid and online environments, which is certainly relevant to ASU’s growing student population.”

Gascoigne has received numerous accolades, including American Association of Teachers of French-Nebraska Teacher of the Year, the UNO Excellence in Teaching Award and the Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award in the Humanities.

“I recognize the energy and excitement on the ASU campus and am thrilled to become part of that,” Gascoigne said. “One of my goals is to work with the college to make sure all stakeholders inside and outside of the campus understand the inherent and applied values of the liberal arts.”

Gascoigne earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics at Michigan State University, a Master of Arts in French at Bowling Green State University and her doctorate in French/second language acquisition at Florida State University. She also studied abroad extensively, particularly in France.

In October 2015, the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents approved the division of ASU’s College of Arts and Sciences into the College of Science and Engineering and the College of Arts and Humanities within the division of academic affairs, effective with the 2016-17 academic year. The College of Arts and Humanities is comprised of the following academic departments: communication and mass media, English and modern languages, history, political science and philosophy, security studies and criminal justice, and visual and performing arts.
