BREAKING: Veteran San Angelo ISD Central High School Principal Bill Waters Announces His Retirement

SAN ANGELO — Long-time educator at San Angelo ISD and Central High School Principal Bill Waters has announced his retirement. According to a message from his desk at Central, Waters will finish the 2023 school year before retiring from education. Waters left a letter thanking the community of San Angelo for everything and everyone he had an impact on.

Bill Waters began his teaching career at SAISD 33 years ago and never left. "I get asked this question all the time. Why have you stayed here? My answer has always been the same. The People," Waters said.

Waters taught at three different SAISD schools in his tenure in San Angelo, Edison Junior High, Glenn Middle School, and Central High school. He was the Principal at Glenn Middle School and Central High School for much of his career.

He goes into detail about the people he worked with throughout his career. "I have had the absolute privilege to meet, work with, and work for so many incredible people. I have been able to build several staff teams filled with outstanding educators and hard-working, loving people."

Waters goes on to speak about all the students he has met, watched over, and helped through their school experiences. Waters says that he has taught, been a principal of, and even hired some of the 50,000 students that have gone through school throughout his years of teaching.

He concluded his letter with appreciation. "When I look back on my career, I will smile and believe that I made a difference. Thank you for allowing me to teach you, work with you, work for you, cheer for you, and celebrate you. It has been my honor!" he said.

Waters made headlines in April of 2022 during his speech to the School Board when he spoke about the effect that COVID-19 had on his teachers and students. He talked about rising mental health issues and declining grades in his students and the exhausted teachers that scrambled to help them. He advocated for better pay for his teachers in SAISD and more competitive salaries for the teachers leaving the district midway through the year due to overwork and insufficient funding. The speech went viral across Texas, and teachers across the state stood behind him.

Regardless of the outcome of that speech, Mr. Waters was and always will be an educator who cared about his students and teachers above all else. He always supported his students through their many endeavors throughout every school year. Whether it was Mr. Waters standing on the sidelines during football season or jumping in the pool after the swim team won a district title, Waters always put his students first.

Bill Waters will be missed around campus once he fully retires, but students and teachers alike learned much from interacting with him on a daily basis.

He always included a quote or story of positive life advice at the end of the morning announcements over the PA system to his students. One phrase in particular still stands out to his students back at Glenn Middle School to this day.

“Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours.” - Bill Waters.
