Expert Preppers Detail How to Outfit Your Vehicle for Severe Winter Weather

SAN ANGELO, TX - Over 24 hours of below-freezing temperatures are scheduled to hit the Concho Valley at the beginning of the week, Monday, Jan. 15.

The high for Monday is 30 degrees with the low temperature dipping down to 15 degrees.

The following Tuesday will have a low of 11 degrees and a high of 32 degrees.

While people in the San Angelo area don't have to deal with winter weather too often, it does happen. And when it does, you'll want to be ready.

That includes what you'll want to make sure isn't in your vehicle when the temperature drops. Cars.com compiled a list of five things to take out of your car during a freeze.

  • Smartphone: Information from Apple warns iPhone and iPad users that extremely cold temperatures may impact battery life or cause devices to shut down temporarily. Keeping these electronic devices warm is advisable to ensure their functionality during emergencies.
  • Canned Beverages: Cold temperatures can cause the liquid inside canned drinks to freeze and expand, leading to potential bursts. Removing canned beverages helps avoid dangerous situations or messy cleanups.
  • Groceries: Canned foods and eggs are prone to freezing and bursting in low temperatures. The USDA recommends bringing groceries inside to prevent damage and ensure food safety.
  • Medications: Extreme cold can compromise the effectiveness of medications. Cars.com advises individuals to take medications out of the car to maintain their potency.
  • Musical Instruments: Instruments, especially wooden ones, may go out of tune or even crack in extreme cold. It is recommended to remove musical instruments from vehicles to protect them from temperature-related damage.

In contrast, AAA suggests keeping specific items in your car to enhance preparedness for emergencies during winter weather:

  • Blanket or Extra Coat and Gloves
  • Phone Charger
  • Flashlight with Extra Batteries
  • Water and Snacks
  • First-Aid Supplies

Additionally, it is crucial to have jumper cables in your car and maintain at least a half-full gas tank.

For assistance on the road, TxDOT's roadside assistance number is 800-525-5555, while emergencies should be directed to 911.
