Gods of Egypt This Week’s Icon Cinema $5 Tuesday Movie Pick

So what happens when you combine hunky heavenly and amazingly beautiful Gods, mortals, luxury seating, 3D visuals, vibration sensation seating to enhance the action film experience, and free popcorn and drink refills? One hell of a movie experience.

This past weekend was my first time trying out such an experience at Icon Cinema, and despite Gods of Egypt having some flaws, all the above mentioned made the trip worthwhile, even at over $12 a ticket. Luckily, for those people who like to take advantage of $5 Tuesdays, they can get the same experience but for about $4 less. Of course, there is an opportunity to stay at the $5 range, but I’m here to say, movie lovers may not be too thrilled without the total package.

Gods of Egypt stars Gerard Butler as the merciless God of Darkness, Set, who overtakes Egypt’s throne from its rightful heir, Horus, the god of air and Set’s nephew, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Set betrays his brother and father, steals his nephew’s eyes and his woman, and plunges the once prosperous empire into chaos where slavery and corruption reign. In the heart of this family dysfunction is Bek, a young mortal played by Brenton Thwaites, who sweeps his young love away from her family and promises her a life of love and prosperity, but all he can provide is thievery. His thievery, however, comes in handy when he forms an alliance with Horus to save his love. This epic battle against Set takes both Bek and Horus into the afterlife and across the heavens.

As stated, Gods of Egypt has its flaws. In fact, the movie came in second this week to Deadpool at $14 million, and critics gave the movie a 3.4 out of 10, or 12 percent, on the TOMATOMETER. Movie lovers gave it an average rating of 3 out 5, or 49 percent. That was based on 21,421 user ratings.

This rating could be because Gods of Egypt has a storyline we’ve seen before. You have the jealous brother who wants the thrown, so he does whatever is necessary to win it; he then leads a prosperous kingdom into despair, and it takes a hero to save it. Only the hero has growing up to do, and through his journey, he learns his purpose. Not to mention, the women have to die so the heroes can fulfill their heroic journeys. In other words, it’s predictable.

Predictable or not, however, the movie has excellent cinematography and action, and as stated, in 3D and with the nice comfortable seating along with the vibration, movie goers feel like they are part of that action. I will say if I didn’t go all out, the experience wouldn’t have been the same. So if you’re willing to pay a little extra for the 3D VIB Seating, or even the Iconic experience, Gods of Egypt is a fun flick movie lovers don’t have to over think, and a great way to relax after a hard day at work. All in all, San Angelo LIVE! rates this movie, based on the entire movie experience, a 4 out of 5. On its own, the rating drops to a 2.5 out of 5.

For the entire 3D movie experience, here are the times to catch Gods of Egypt:

  • 12 p.m.
  • 2:40 p.m.
  • 5:20 p.m.
  • 8 p.m.
  • 10:40 p.m.

For the Iconic viewing, the times are 11:40 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:40 p.m., 7:20 p.m. and 10 p.m. To take advantage of the $5 Tuesday deal, there’s one showing at 12:40 p.m. The fee for the Iconic movie experience is $7 or $8, depending on the seat.
