FRESNO, CA –– A Fresno County K-9 is recuperating after being viciously attacked by an intoxicated suspect.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday afternoon deputies were dispatched to a home for reports of a domestic disturbance involving a wanted suspect.
According to the suspect's mother, her son was intoxicated and under the influence of drugs. The woman called 9-1-1 because she was afraid he would hurt himself or someone else.
After the deputies arrived, a K-9 and handler also responded to the scene. During a confrontation with the deputies, the suspect attempted to flee from police and the K-9 was sent after him. When the dog caught up with the suspect, he stabbed him at least three times. The suspect was then shot at least once by officers.
The dog was then rushed to a veterinary emergency hospital for surgery for treatment. The dog is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect was also transported to a local hospital and is also expected to live.
In addition to having warrants for multiple felonies like domestic violence and weapon charges, the suspect will also face charges for the assault on the K-9.
“This was all preventable. This dog did not need to get stabbed,” said Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Pursell. “This is all the actions of the suspect. He made these choices, so this was all very preventable.”
