PHILADELPHIA, PA — A U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to protect Jill Biden accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday morning at Philadelphia International Airport, authorities said.
The agent was injured in what officials described as a “negligent discharge” of his firearm shortly before 9 a.m., according to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The former First Lady was not in the area at the time of the incident.
Initial reports indicate the agent was traveling in an unmarked vehicle when the gun discharged, said Philadelphia Police Officer Tanya Little. Additional law enforcement personnel responded to assist.
The agent was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, Guglielmi said.
The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility is expected to investigate the incident.
