WATCH: Dog Causes Fire After Chewing Lithium-Ion Battery

CHAPEL HILL, NC — The Chapel Hill Fire Department is reminding the public to safely handle and store lithium-ion batteries after a family pet accidentally sparked a small fire earlier this month.

According to the department, a dog named Colton was caught on video “counter-surfing” and getting hold of a device containing a lithium-ion battery while his owners — a Chapel Hill firefighter’s family — were away. The battery had been properly charged and unplugged, but was not stored safely. When Colton chewed through its protective casing, it overheated and ignited.

Fire officials said the incident caused only smoke damage and a ruined rug. No injuries were reported.

The department shared the story following Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness about lithium-ion battery hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns that such batteries can catch fire or even explode when damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to extreme heat.

The NFPA advises consumers to:

  • Stop charging batteries once full.

  • Use only manufacturer-approved chargers.

  • Replace batteries that are damaged, swollen, or discolored.

  • Have any repairs performed by qualified professionals.
