SAN ANGELO – The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued a Fire Danger Statement for Thursday afternoon for the Concho Valley, Big Country and Heartland as dry, hot and windy conditions increase across the region.
According to the NWS, elevated fire conditions will be in place Thursday afternoon with south to southwest winds at 10 to 15 mph and gusty with low humidities from noon to six p.m.
In addition, on Friday the NWS has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the northwest Big Country. Winds will be out of the southwest at 15 to 20 mph with gusts above 30 mph. Humidities in the 15 to 25 percent range will combine with extremely dry fuels to create wildfire hazards. Any wildfires on Friday will be difficult to contain.
The forecast calls for sunny and windy conditions through the Christmas Holiday Weekend across the region with high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s with strong, gusty southwest winds.
Residents are urged not to burn anything outside while fire danger conditions persist.
Temperatures and winds will drop to normal levels by Tuesday.
This is a potentially serious wildfire situation and residents are advised to be aware of the conditions around them especially while traveling in the area over the Holiday weekend.
