NWS: 100% Chance of Dangerous Snow & Ice Wednesday Night Into Thursday

SAN ANGELO – The major winter storm system inundating the Concho Valley Wednesday will bring ice and snow to the region beginning Wednesday evening.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo have a 100% chance of snow in the forecast region wide for Wednesday night.

Road conditions will deteriorate across the Big Country and Concho Valley starting Wednesday afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing in the Abilene area around noon Wednesday as that arctic cold front blasts through.  Temps in San Angelo will fall throughout the day and reach below freezing around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Precipitation is falling across the region mainly in the form of light rain Wednesday morning.  That will turn to freezing rain, sleet and eventually snow across the area.  TxDOT crews have pretreated bridges and overpasses and Loop 306 in San Angelo in anticipation of icy roadways creating very hazardous driving conditions.

Snow accumulations will reach around five inches in the Big Country, three inches in the San Angelo area and about 1/2 inch of freezing rain/ice in the I-10 corridor around Sonora.  Most of the frozen precipitation will occur from midnight Wednesday through daybreak Thursday making the Thursday morning commute very hazardous.

The impact of wind chill values will be greatest Thursday morning with temperatures in the teens to single digits and wind chill values at zero or below.  Temperatures this low can kill outdoor pets, burst unprotected pipes and ruin unprotected house plants.  Now is the time to protect all three.

The coldest temperatures of the arctic cold front will come Friday and Saturday morning with temperatures falling to around 7 to 12 degrees.  Wind chills will fall into the -5 degree range.  Any thawing that occurs will refreeze Friday night creating black ice Saturday morning.  Driving will be extremely dangerous.

This a serious, life threatening weather situation.
