Experts Warn of Extreme Wildfire Danger & Discourage All Outdoor Burning

SAN ANGELO – Hot and critically dry weather is smothering West Texas over the next few days and experts have issued dire warnings about any outdoor activity that might produce a spark.

The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Concho Valley for Tuesday and a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday because of the critical wildfire conditions.

The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the Concho Valley, Big Country and the Northern Edwards Plateau.

The Fire Weather Watch is in effect all day Wednesday for all of West Central Texas.

Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust to 25 to 30 mph throughout the two day period and combine with dropping from 18 percent Tuesday to 8 percent or lower Wednesday.

The high winds and low humidity will combine with extremely dry fuel including dry grass and brush to create conditions where even a small spark from a welder or a chain dragging on the pavement could start an uncontrollable wildfire and devastate thousands of acres and damage millions of dollars worth of property and threaten lives.  Livestock, crops and wildlife will be in extreme danger should any wildfire start.

A Red Flag Warning means that extreme wildfire conditions are occurring.

A Fire Weather Watch means that there is a potential for extreme wildfire conditions to develop.

This is a serious and dynamic weather situation.
