San Angelo Youth’s Catch Could Set Lone Wolf Lake Record

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo youth angler reeled in what could become a record catch at Lone Wolf Lake when she landed a massive Smallmouth Buffalo weighing nearly 28 pounds.

Niyeleigh Fernandez was fishing with her family at Glenmore Park when she hooked the fish, which measured 33-3/4 inches long and weighed in at 27.95 pounds, according to Inland Fisheries San Angelo District of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Officials said the catch is a pending waterbody record for Lone Wolf Lake, the section of the South Concho River above Lone Wolf Dam.

The Smallmouth Buffalo, a species more commonly associated with the Mississippi River, also has a presence in Texas lakes and rivers. They are known for their size and strength, making them a challenging catch for anglers of all ages.

Texas Parks and Wildlife congratulated Fernandez on her accomplishment, calling it an “awesome catch.”

If verified, the catch will stand as the official waterbody record for the popular San Angelo fishing spot.
