SAN ANGELO, TX — The Inland Fisheries San Angelo District of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has completed a crappie survey at Lake Nasworthy and Twin Buttes Reservoir, providing an update on fishing conditions in the Concho Valley.
According to the district, the total number of crappie caught during the survey was lower than in previous surveys at both lakes. Despite the decline, the district reported the fish observed were healthy and growing quickly, with harvestable-size crappie still present.
At Lake Nasworthy, white crappie measuring up to 12 inches were observed during sampling. Survey data showed fish reached 10 inches in approximately two years, which the district described as good growth for the area.
At Twin Buttes Reservoir, white crappie measuring up to 13 inches were documented. Fish there reached 10 inches in about 1.7 years, indicating faster growth. The district said the lower number of fish observed at Twin Buttes is likely due to low water levels.
"Winter can be a great time of year to target crappie; grab the family and the jiggin' rods and enjoy some of the warmer winter weather in the forecast," information stated.
For bank anglers, the Lake Nasworthy fishing pier was identified as a recommended location.
The district also reported more than 40 Mossback fish attractors have been placed around the edges of the pier to provide additional structure for fish. A map showing the locations of the attractors is below:
