SAN ANGELO, TX — Forecasters with the National Weather Service in San Angelo are growing more confident that an arctic air mass will bring sharply colder temperatures to West Central Texas this weekend, with a low to medium chance of wintry precipitation.
The weekend of Jan. 24-25 could see daytime highs struggle to reach the 30s and overnight lows drop into the teens and 20s across the region, a significant departure from near-normal temperatures expected through the workweek.
Dry conditions and temperatures close to seasonal averages are forecast through Friday, with highs in the 50s to mid-60s and lows generally in the 30s and 40s.
Confidence is increasing for a strong cold front to arrive by late Friday or early Saturday, potentially bringing a 20% to 40% chance of a wintry mix, including freezing rain, sleet, or snow. Forecasters urged residents with weekend travel plans to monitor updates closely.
In San Angelo, the detailed forecast calls for sunny conditions on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a high near 64, followed by partly to mostly cloudy skies Tuesday through Thursday and highs in the low to mid-60s. A 20% chance of showers is possible Friday afternoon, rising to 40% for rain or freezing rain Friday night. Saturday carries a 30% chance of freezing rain and sleet with a high near 30, and Sunday carries a high near 37 under partly sunny skies.
Similar cold conditions are expected in surrounding communities, including Abilene, Junction, and Sweetwater.
