Unseasonably Hot Weekend Ahead With Record Highs Possible

SAN ANGELO, TX — Record high temperatures are possible across West Central Texas this weekend as unseasonably warm and dry conditions persist, the National Weather Service in San Angelo said Friday.

Afternoon highs are forecast to reach 88 degrees in both Abilene and San Angelo on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28 and March 1. Normal highs for late February are in the mid- to upper 60s, putting forecasted temperatures 20-25 degrees above average.

In Abilene, the February record high is 88 degrees (set in 2006), giving a medium to high chance (70-80%) of tying or breaking it Saturday. Sunday's chance drops to low (10-15%). San Angelo's February record is 89 degrees (also 2006), with a medium chance (70%) of tying or breaking on Saturday and low (5-10%) on Sunday.

The heat is expected to be most intense Saturday, with widespread upper 80s across the region, including 86-88 degrees in places like Ballinger, Coleman, Haskell, Junction, Ozona and Sweetwater.

Conditions will remain dry through Sunday, with no precipitation expected. Lows will stay mild, in the 50s to low 60s.

A cooldown arrives Monday, with highs dropping to the low to mid-70s and rain chances returning Tuesday into Wednesday. Longer-range outlooks show better precipitation potential mid-next week (around March 4-8), as a cold front and approaching storm system could bring showers and thunderstorms to the area. It's too early for specifics on totals, but the shift offers hope for much-needed rainfall after dry conditions.
