NWS Enhances Storm Risk for Wednesday

SAN ANGELO, TX — Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop late Wednesday afternoon and increase in coverage into Wednesday night across west central Texas, the National Weather Service in San Angelo said.

The strongest storms could produce large hail 2 inches or larger in diameter, damaging winds of 65 to 79 mph and an isolated tornado, forecasters said. The highest risk — categorized as “enhanced,” or level 3 out of 5 — covers a portion of the region north of San Angelo, including areas near Haskell and Abilene. A “slight” risk (level 2) extends across much of the central area, including San Angelo.

Storms are expected mainly after 4 p.m. Wednesday and into the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts of three-quarters of an inch to 1 inch are possible, with localized amounts exceeding an inch, raising the threat of minor flooding in low-lying and urban areas, the NWS said.

A separate excessive rainfall outlook placed most of west central Texas under a “marginal” risk of flash flooding Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.

The threat eases Thursday, with only a 30 percent chance of showers before 7 a.m. followed by mostly sunny skies and a high near 87.

Forecasters are watching another round of storms Friday. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across the region, mainly Friday afternoon and evening, under a “marginal” severe thunderstorm risk (level 1 out of 5). The strongest storms could produce large hail up to 2 inches in diameter, strong winds of 50 to 60 mph and frequent lightning.
