NWS Forecasts Increasing Rain Chances

SAN ANGELO, TX — An active weather pattern will bring increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms across West Central Texas this week along with cooler temperatures, the National Weather Service in San Angelo reported Sunday. Rain chances are expected to linger into next weekend.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible late Sunday afternoon and evening, mainly north of Interstate 20, where forecasters have issued a slight risk (Level 1 out of 5). Any storms that develop could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters, primarily between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The severe weather risk increases slightly Monday, with a slight risk (Level 2 out of 5) for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms across the Big Country north of a line from Mertzon to Eden to Brownwood. Hazards include large hail, damaging winds of 60 mph or greater and an isolated tornado, most likely from mid-afternoon to evening.

High temperatures will reach the mid-90s to near 100 degrees across the Big Country and Concho Valley into Monday before moderating. According to the NWS forecast, highs in Abilene are expected to hit 91 degrees Sunday and 96 Monday; San Angelo 92 and 96; and Sweetwater 95 and 100.

Slightly cooler conditions are forecast Tuesday through Friday, with highs generally in the low to mid-80s, dropping into the upper 70s. Precipitation probabilities will rise sharply, reaching 55-65% Tuesday and 70-85% Wednesday through Friday across most locations, including Abilene, San Angelo, Ballinger, Brady and Brownwood.

The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for May 21-25 calls for above-normal rainfall and cooler-than-normal temperatures for West Central Texas. Normal rainfall for that period is about 0.40-0.60 inches, and normal highs are generally in the upper 80s.
