Conaway Introduces Resolution Responding to China's Overreach in Hong Kong

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) Thursday introduced H. Con. Res. 104, expressing the sense of Congress that Hong Kong’s loss of judicial and political autonomy would expose individuals residing in the United States to a judicial system subservient to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and that the United States should suspend its extradition treaty with Hong Kong until it can be certified that Hong Kong’s judicial independence has been reestablished.

“The Chinese Communist Party has once again broken international law through its recent actions usurping the autonomy of Hong Kong, and the United States must take immediate action to protect those within our borders from the CCP’s authoritarian and corrupt judicial system by suspending our extradition treaty with Hong Kong—immediately.” said Congressman Mike Conaway. “This will prevent individuals residing in the United States from the risk of being transferred to mainland China and subjected to the judicial system of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the influence of the CCP.

"The new security laws imposed on Hong Kong by the PRC are further evidence that this tyrannical government has zero respect for upholding their official treaties and agreements, and every day it’s becoming more explicitly clear they cannot be trusted. The United States cannot allow extradition from the U.S. to be misused, and we should not reinstate this agreement until Hong Kong can clearly certify their independence from communist China.”
