It's Official – Allen West is Running for Governor

CARROLLTON, TX – Republican Party of Texas Chairman and former Congressman Col. Allen West announced Sunday his run for Governor of Texas in the 2020 Republican Primary.

The Texas Tribune is reporting West made his run official at a church in Carrollton Sunday morning.

West had been rumored to run against GOP Gov. Greg Abbott since he announced he was stepping down as Texas GOP Chairman in June.  His resignation is official July 11.

West spoke at the Concho Valley Republican Women's June luncheon; here's that story.

According to the Tribune, West did not directly mention Abbott in his remarks Sunday in the church. West sketched out a platform focused on shielding the state's energy resources against the Green New Deal — the sweeping climate change proposal pushed by some Democrats in Washington, D.C. — securing the state's border "to ensure that Texas is for Texans" and combatting sex trafficking.

Abbott has been criticized for his executive orders dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic specifically the mask mandate.

Abbott is challenged by former one term State Senator Don Huffines as well as Col. West.  Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller mulled running against Abbott but decided to run for reelection.

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Abbott and toured the border with him last week.

The GOP Primary election was set for March 2022 but redistricting is expected to push Election Day to at least May.
