Census Data Forces City Council to Redraw Voting Maps

SAN ANGELO – The City of San Angelo will host two public meetings to discuss the proposed boundaries for redistricting city council single-member districts. The meetings will be held in various locations and times to allow for maximum participation.

The City Council is considering significant changes to single-member district boundaries based upon 2020 census data.  The U.S. Constitution mandates redistricting every ten years following the census.

According to the 2020 census data, the City’s council member districts are not of sufficiently equal population and must be redrawn in order to comply with the US Constitution and City Charter.

The proposed changes to voting precincts are outlined in red in the map below.

The preliminary plan and other information about the City’s proposed redistricting of the council member districts will be available at the two meetings, online at cosatx.us/redistricting, and for public inspection during normal business hours at the City Clerk’s Office (72 W. College Ave., Suite 204) Monday through Friday from now until Dec. 6.

Citizens interested in more information can contact the City Clerk’s office at [email protected], 325-656-4405 or visit cosatx.us/redistricting.

The City Council redistricting will only effect single-member districts for city council representatives in local, municipal elections which are generally held in May.  School Districts are responsible for complying with state and federal law concerning districts for school board trustees.

Tom Green County Commissioners have already passed redistricting for county precincts for the March Primary election.
