Showdown in Knickerbocker: Commissioner Candidates to Fight for Support

KNICKERBOCKER, TX – The six candidates running for Pct. 4 Tom Green County Commissioner are set to spar Thursday evening in the first campaign event of the primary where all six are scheduled to be present.

Up for grabs is the next four year term as the representative from the southwest quadrant of Tom Green County and Southwest San Angelo on the Commissioners Court.

According to the Texas Association of Counties, a county commissioner in Texas has the following duties:

  • As member of the commissioners court, exercises broad policy-making authority
  • Represents one of four precincts within the county
  • Typically responsible for building and maintaining county roads and bridges within the precinct

The commissioners court conducts the general business of the county and consists of the county judge and four commissioners. The court:

  • Adopts the county’s budget and tax rate
  • Approves all budgeted purchases of the county
  • Fills vacancies in elective and appointive offices
  • Sets all salaries and benefits
  • Has exclusive authority to authorize contracts
  • Provides and maintains all county buildings and facilities

Incumbent Republican Pct. 4 Commissioner Bill Ford is running for reelection and has attracted five challengers in the GOP Primary March 1, 2022 and that's the most candidates in a race for Tom Green County Commissioner in recent memory.

Commissioner Ford sat down with San Angelo Live for a wide ranging interview recently.

Watch that extensive interview below:

Commissioner Ford's challengers are Lori Wilson, CoCo Simpson, Derrick Garnett, Shawn Nanny and Dustin Barton.

This historic race has drawn the high number of candidates for a number of reasons.  The challengers interviewed on San Angelo Live say it is time for a new Commissioner without citing any single, specific reason.

Lori Wilson lists her occupation as 'community leader' on the Secretary of State's website.  Watch her interview below:

CoCo Simpson is a tax preparer who lives in the Christoval area.  Check out her interview below:

Dustin Barton works in the Tom Green County Juvenile Probation Office.  Here is his San Angelo Live Interview below:

San Angelo Live! is giving all candidates the opportunity to sit down for an in-studio interview during the primary campaign.

The Knickerbocker Community Center Candidate forum for GOP candidates for Tom Green County Commissioner Pct. 4 is Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the Knickerbocker Community Center.  The event is open to the public but seating is limited.
