SAN ANGELO, TX — John Crimber has earned the nickname, “The Phenom,” for a reason.
At just 20 years old, he’s the youngest man in the history of the Professional Bull Riders to earn $1 million.
Earlier this month, the Decatur cowboy won a PBR event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as the only competitor to ride all four bulls.
Now he’ll look to add the San Angelo Rodeo to his impressive list of accomplishments.
His score of 90 has him in first place heading into tonight’s finals at CRC Roofers Coliseum.
He’ll have plenty of competition with Mineral Wells’ Noah Lee in second at 88.5, Oregon’s TJ Gray in third at 87.5 and Oregon’s Tristen Hutchings (second in the world standings) in fourth at 87.
The rest of the field for the finals consists of 5. Josiah Chism, 86.5; 6. (tie) Wacey Schalla and Earnie Courson, 86; 8. Koby Jacobson, 85; 9. Braxton Whitesell, 84.5; 10. (tie) Dakota Hill and Mason Moody, 84; and 12. (tie) Clayton Sellars and Hayden Ferguson, 83.5.
San Angelo has two local favorites to root for in Joel Harris and Dylan Hancock in tie-down roping. Harris is in second place at 27.3 seconds on three runs, while Hancock has a time of 28.6. Everyone is chasing Beau Cooper’s 26.2.
In barrel racing, defending world champion and No. 1-ranked Kassie Mowry of Dublin will try to catch another Texas cowgirl, Madisonville’s Michelle Alley.
Mowry’s overall time of 29.98 seconds on two runs trails Alley’s time of 29.84. Alley is currently 23rd in the world standings.
Cotulla’s London Gorham, who is just 18 years old, is also in striking distance at 30.05, along with Henrietta’s LaTricia Duke (second in the world standings) at 30.06.
Other highlights in tonight’s finals include the world’s No. 2-ranked team roping duo of Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira leading with a time of 14.2 seconds on three runs, while Clint Summers and Jake Corkill are 0.4 seconds behind.
In saddle bronc, Zeke Thurston leads the way after an 87.5, which gives him a slim lead in a crowded leaderboard with six other riders within two points.
In bareback riding, Leighton Berry’s 92 has him out in front with a 3.5-point lead over Cole Reiner. Luke Thrash is in third at 88, while Wacey Schalla (third in the world standings) is fourth at 87.5.
In steer wrestling, Cody Devers’ time of 13.4 seconds on three runs is 0.7 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
In breakaway roping, Danielle Lowman’s time of 4.2 seconds on two runs gives her a lead of 0.4 seconds over Delani Beatty.
After tonight’s finals, which begin at 7 p.m., the rodeo will conclude with the all-star Cinch Chute-Out on Saturday and Tejano Day on Sunday.
