The Racing Champions of 2023

SAN ANGELO, TX — It was a night of Top Dogs versus the Under Dogs in the 11th Performance during the 91st Annual San Angelo Rodeo. Finals night crowned a new set of champions as the Rodeo reached its finale.

The timed events went wild during the finals. Several top dogs kicked the events off by winning the money. In the Tie-Down Roping, San Angelo’s own Cody Waldrop came in second in the Average after posting the fastest time in the Third Round with a 7.9-second tie. However, Justin Smith, the fastest Cowboy so far, managed to win it all with a 23.7 in his three attempts.

Moving into the Team Roping, the quickest duo headed into the finals showed why they were the top dogs. J.C. and L.J. Yeahquo roped their steer in 3.9 seconds to take home the money in not only the 1st and 3rd rounds but the Average as well. These up-and-coming Cowboys pulled off the biggest win of their career on Friday night.

The first underdog to pull off an upset came in Steer Wrestling. Jay Williamson from Weatherford, Texas, finished with a 12.1 on three head to win himself $9,795.

Finally, the Cowgirls came to play in the Barrel Racing. Lindsey Sears from Lipan posted of the fastest times ever in San Angelo with a run of 13.88 seconds. As fast as that Cowgirl was, she could not beat our champion over three rounds. Dublin native Kassie Mowry Hopped on her horse, “Will,” and finished in 14 seconds flat. That run, along with her first two, won her the rodeo.

San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick tracked down the champ after her incredible run and asked what it meant to win the San Angelo Rodeo. It’s the Barrel Racing, presented by San Angelo’s Cardiovascular Center of Excellence.
