ASU Press Release: ASU Designated "Military Friendly" by G.I. Jobs Magazine

For the fifth consecutive year, Angelo State University has received the designation as a “Military Friendly School” from G.I. Jobs magazine, which serves military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The 2014 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students, and to ensure their success on campus.  Overall, Angelo State was among 1,868 educational institutions recognized nationally with the honor.

“We are very proud of our ongoing recognition as a Military Friendly School,” said ASU President Brian J. May.  “Our faculty, staff and administrators have worked hard to structure programs that meet the needs of military personnel, veterans and their families.  We honor them and their service to our country by providing the specialized enrollment assistance, support services and academic programs they need to get a quality ASU education.”

The institutions on the 2014 list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience, according to the G.I. Jobs announcement, which indicated the recognized schools are making the grade by offering scholarships and discounts, veterans’ clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those with military experience.

In addition to the programs and services that previously earned ASU its “Military Friendly” designation, the university recently opened a new Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center in the Houston Harte University Center.  The VETS Center provides enrollment and academic support for student veterans, as well as special programs, networking opportunities, social and study areas, and a small computer lab.

Sean Collins, director for G.I. Jobs, said, “Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools shows Angelo State University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students.  The need for education is growing, and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”

A detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be published in G.I. Jobs’ annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools this October.  G.I. Jobs (www.gijobs.com) is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business with various related publications, including Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines.  The group annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
