Western Artwork to Hang at Fort Concho

Featuring 92 paintings and 18 sculptures by 61 artists from across the country, the American Plains Artists Show returns to Fort Concho with an opening reception June 30.

The event will be from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in the Quartermaster Building at Burgess Street and East Avenue C. Dorothy Douthit of Fiddle Fire Catering will provide western-themed refreshments, and members of the Concho Cowboy Company will be on hand in period garb.

The exhibit will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Tuesdays through Saturdays, and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sundays. There is no charge to see the show, located in the former home of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art on the fort’s northeast corner, where there is ample parking.

The show first visited Fort Concho in 2014. Its return continues through Sunday, Aug. 7.

Guests can vote for their favorite piece of artwork in the show with a “people’s choice” award announced in August after the exhibit ends. All of the artwork will be available for sale, with portions of each purchase benefiting the American Plains Artists, Fort Concho and the artist.

The American Plains Artists was organized in Denver City, Texas, in 1982 by a small group of artists who banded together to celebrate through fine art the vast region known at the American Great Plains. The APA has a national and international membership, and members’ works “educate the public through traditional and representational artworks about the American Plains, including the landscape, wildlife, peoples and ways of life in historical and modern times.”
