SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo area issued 80 new oil and gas drilling permits in April 2025, the second-highest total among all Texas districts, according to the Railroad Commission of Texas.
Only the Midland district reported more, with 352 permits. Statewide, the commission issued 750 original drilling permits last month, including 665 to drill new oil or gas wells, 19 to re-enter plugged wellbores, eight for field transfers, 56 for re-completions, and two reclassifications.
The San Angelo region, designated as District 7C, also saw 78 new oil well completions and two gas well completions. It trailed only Midland in oil completions, which totaled 519 along with 86 gas completions.
The breakdown of well types for total original drilling permits in April 2025 is: 127 oil, 36 gas, 549 oil and gas, 28 injection, and 10 other permits.
Overall, Commission staff across Texas processed 1,571 oil, 445 gas, and 503 injection completions in April.
