CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — A San Angelo-based trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety was named Grand Champion at the 32nd annual Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Texas Challenge held this week in Corpus Christi.
Dustin Henderson of DPS and Maurice Bucklin of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office earned the top honors and will go on to represent Texas at the North America Inspectors Championship in August.

The competition brought together 21 DPS officers and nine Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) officers from across the state to test their skills and knowledge in enforcing federal motor carrier safety regulations. Over three days, participants completed commercial vehicle inspections and written exams covering safety rules and operational procedures. Judging was conducted by industry professionals and retired DPS troopers.
“Our CVE personnel play a critical role in protecting Texas roads,” said Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee. “Their work not only ensures that commercial vehicles comply with vital safety regulations, but also fosters partnerships with the industry through education and outreach. By training and equipping industry personnel with the knowledge to operate safely, we are building a culture of safety that benefits every single person who travels on Texas roads.”
MCSAP officers are local and county law enforcement personnel certified through DPS CVE training. During the Texas Challenge, trucking industry professionals also participated in safety workshops.
The Texas CVE program dates back to 1927, when the state created its first inspection unit in response to increasing truck traffic and road damage. Today, 769 certified DPS personnel are stationed statewide to enforce commercial vehicle safety standards.
