SAN ANGELO, TX — The Blackshear Heights Family is launching its annual Juneteenth celebration Thursday, June 19, at Martin Luther King Jr. Park with an evening of activities.
The opening event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and features water activities for kids and soul food provided by Lorraine’s Catering. The celebration continues through Saturday, June 21, with a full schedule of events, including music, food, art, guest speakers, and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
The highlight of the final day will be the Juneteenth Parade on Saturday morning. Lineup begins at 8 a.m. at 2121 MLK Drive, and the parade steps off at 9 a.m. Local vendors are invited to set up booths free of charge.
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when the last black slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday is now recognized nationwide as a time to honor freedom, resilience, and African-American heritage.
Blackshear Heights Family is a San Angelo-based community organization that promotes well-being and leadership among youth and seniors.
