SAN ANGELO, TX — Families interested in enrolling their children in the Concho Valley Council of Governments’ Head Start preschool for the 2025–2026 school year can attend an in-person registration event on Wednesday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Registration will be held at two locations in San Angelo:
- Day Head Start – 3026 N. Oakes
- San Jacinto Site – 800 Spaulding (Entrance off North Pope Street).
San Jacinto Head Start (formerly Rio Head Start) will continue to operate under the Concho Valley Council of Governments.
The Head Start program serves children ages 3 to 4, while Early Head Start is designed for infants, toddlers (birth to age 36months), and expectant mothers. According to ERSEA Manager Ofelia Barron, Early Head Start includes a prenatal curriculum and support services for pregnant mothers. Once the baby is born, the child is guaranteed a spot in the program.
The initiative has been operating nationally for more than 60 years; the Head Start initiative has been active in the Concho Valley for over 20 years. The program offers structured classroom learning focused on early math, science, language, and literacy development. Enrolled children also receive nutritious meals, including breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
In addition to academics, Head Start emphasizes family support services, helping parents work toward goals such as health, mental health, employment, education, and stable housing.
Head Start enrollment is free and primarily based on income eligibility. However, children with the greatest needs may still qualify for the program even if their family exceeds the income guidelines.
Program Hours:
- Three-year-olds: 7:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. (Day and San Jacinto sites)
- Four-year-olds: Extended hours with afternoon enrichment at the San Jacinto site through a new partnership with San Angelo ISD
- Early Head Start (birth to age 36months): 7:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Families should bring the following documents to register:
- Official birth certificate
