SAN ANGELO, TX — Fort Concho will host two special events in late July to celebrate San Angelo's cowboy heritage and honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers.
The first event, National Cowboy Day, will be held Saturday, July 26. Activities begin at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast at Barracks 6, located at Flipper and Burgess streets.
Laura Huckaby of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will present a talk on a featured exhibit at 9:30 a.m., followed by a skit at 10 a.m. performed by the Concho Cowboy Company.
On Monday, July 28, Fort Concho will mark the 159th anniversary of the formation of the all-Black Army units known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The event will take place at the West Texas Buffalo Soldier Memorial, located across from Fort Concho, and will feature remarks from Lt. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins, president of Angelo State University. A reception and special viewing of Buffalo Soldier exhibits will follow at the Barracks 1 Visitor Center.
Both events are free and open to the public.
