This Is How to Drive When a School Bus Stops

SAN ANGELO, TX — As students return to campus, local officials are reminding drivers to follow Texas school bus safety laws to help keep children safe on the road.

In Texas, drivers must stop for a school bus displaying red flashing lights and an extended stop sign, regardless of the direction they are traveling. Motorists are required to stop at least 20 feet from the bus, either in front or behind, and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion and the lights stop flashing.

The only exception is on a divided highway with an unpaved space of at least five feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier. In that case, drivers traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution, but vehicles behind the bus must stop.

Officials also urged motorists to drive carefully in school zones, allow extra time for morning commutes, and watch for children walking or biking to school, especially near intersections.

The City of San Angelo and San Angelo ISD stressed that following these rules can help ensure the first day — and every day — is safe for students.
