SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Cyber Intelligence, Innovation, and Security Studies has been officially re-named the Kay Bailey Hutchison Institute, with approval coming today (Aug. 15) at a meeting of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.
The Kay Bailey Hutchison Institute (KBHI) has been re-named to better represent a continued evolution and further broadening of its mission. Transitioning from a "center" to an "institute" more accurately reflects its expanded interdisciplinary responsibilities and institutional role.

As the KBH Center for Cyber Intelligence, Innovation, and Security Studies, its key objective was to develop a community-focused Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence as a regional hub serving all of Texas. As the KBHI, that mission has now expanded to also include providing comprehensive support for innovative academic, research, and community and industry collaboration initiatives across the entire university - and Dr. Scarlet Clouse, dean of the ASU College of Education, has been named the KBHI's first permanent director.

Dr. Scarlet Clouse
To help her direct the institute's new support services where they are needed most, Clouse has formed an Innovation Focus Group that includes members representing many different areas of campus.
"We're folding in initiatives for teaching and learning, ongoing professional development, artificial intelligence, the Innovation and Research Hub, and outreach and community engagement," Clouse said. "So we now have the KBHI providing four quadrants of support - innovation, operations, education and outreach."
At the same time, the KBHI will also continue its previous role in providing ongoing collaboration and support for:
- ASU academic programs in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and security studies
- Partnership programs with Goodfellow AFB, Howard College and San Angelo ISD
- K-12 and community cybersecurity outreach and events
- ASU's Regional Security Operations Center
- Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence research
The KBHI was originally established at ASU as the Center for Security Studies in 2010. It was later officially named for retired U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in recognition of her support in securing in the initial $5.5 million in Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force grants that funded its formation and first four years of operation. It will move to its new location in The Nexus at Angelo State once the facility opens.
The evolution of the KBHI and its expanded mission are also prime examples of why securing funding to support new and enhanced resources for innovative academic, research and collaborative initiatives is one of the top priorities of ASU's ongoing "Leading the Charge" capital campaign.
