SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University will present a special guest recital of classical music by renowned French pianist Jeanne Hourez on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building at 2602 Dena Drive.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Carr EFA Building's Eldon Black Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. Hourez will perform with Colorado-based musician Joel Ferst on saxophone and Dr. Timothy Bonenfant of the ASU music faculty on bass clarinet.
The musical program for the concert will include:
- "Strange Lights" by Harriet Steinke
- "Nocturne" by Lili Boulanger
- Selections from "Romantic Sketches" by Marie Jaell
- "Nocturne" by Clara Schumann
- "Sonata for cello & piano op. 6" by Mel Bonis
- "Three Mediterranean Sketches" by Marguerite Canal
- "Somewhere over the Clouds" by Ania Vu
Hailed as a rare talent on piano, Hourez is recognized for her versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, researcher and advocate for underrepresented voices in music. She has performed with such orchestras as the Orchestre Symphonique de Cannes, the Orchestre Symphonique Azureen and the Orchestre Philharmonique des Musiciens de Montreal, and her concert career has taken her across Europe, North America and Asia. An advocate for more inclusive music, she is dedicated to highlighting works by female composers from the Belle Epoque to today.
Hourez earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Texas, and she is also a graduate of the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris. She is currently an assistant professor of music at Southwestern University. See her website at jeannehourez.com.
Joel Ferst is a multifaceted saxophonist, electronic artist, improviser, composer and teacher based in Boulder/Denver, Colo., and has premiered over 40 works for the saxophone. In spring 2026, he will be releasing his debut album of Brazilian contemporary music, as well as his evening-length, self-composed set titled "Distorted Reflections." A professor of music, Dr. Timothy Bonenfant directs ASU's Single-Reeds Studio and performs with two fellow ASU music faculty as The Mesquite Trio. He has performed with symphony orchestras in California, Idaho, Nevada and Texas, and he has also accompanied such notable performers as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Randy Newman, Dudley Moore, the Village People and the Moody Blues.
