ASU to Host Public Talk on U.S.-China Relations

SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University will host Dr. Ryan Yonk, director of education at the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER), for a public presentation on U.S.-China relations on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the ASU Cavness Science Building at 2460 Dena Drive.

Sponsored by the Texas Tech University Free Market Institute at Angelo State University, Yonk's presentation will take place in Room 100 of the Cavness Building and is free and open to the public.

In his presentation based on his co-authored book, "The China Dilemma: Rethinking US-China Relations Through Public Choice Theory," Yonk will discuss how public choice analysis is politically neutral, and how introducing the logic of economics into the space dominated by political science and sociology is an important addition to the discussion. He will also offer opinions that can be used to make a wide variety of observations on China and U.S.-China relations. His main priority is not to necessarily promote one agenda over another, but to set the table for a more sober and complete conversation regarding China.

Also a senior research fellow at AIER, Yonk previously held academic positions at North Dakota State University, Utah State University and Southern Utah University, and he is one of the founders of Strata Policy. His research explores how policy can be better crafted to achieve greater individual autonomy and prosperity. He is the author or editor of numerous additional books, including:

  • "Green V. Green"
  • "Nature Unbound: Bureaucracy vs. the Environment"
  • "The Reality of American Energy"
  • "Politics and Quality of Life: The Role of Well-Being in Political Outcomes."

Yonk has also authored numerous articles in academic journals, including Public Choice, The Independent Review, Applied Research in Quality of Life and The Journal of Private Enterprise. He holds a Ph.D. from Georgia State University and a M.S. and B.S. from Utah State University.

The TTU Free Market Institute at ASU aims to advance research and teaching related to the free enterprise system and the institutional environment necessary for it to function well, and to support the missions of the ASU Norris-Vincent College of Business. The institute also develops and operates student and public programming that is supported by $1 million in anonymous gifts for the benefit of ASU students and the San Angelo community.

Free Market Institute programming is also another example of why securing funding to support the various components of ASU's annual Distinguished Speaker Series is one of the top priorities of the ongoing "Leading the Charge" capital campaign.
