MERTZON, TX — Irion County ISD announced heightened safety measures on campus Wednesday in coordination with law enforcement, though officials say no direct threats have been made against the district.
In a letter to parents, Superintendent Dr. Nikki Moore said the decision follows concerns about a “possible disgruntled community member.” The superintendent stated that the district has not received any direct or specific threats but is taking proactive steps to ensure student safety.
“We believe it is crucial to take proactive measures to ensure a safe learning environment,” Moore wrote. The district is working closely with the Irion County Sheriff’s Office, Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Shortly after the district’s announcement, the Irion County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the incident prompting concern “did not occur in Irion County.” The department also noted it is not the investigating agency and therefore cannot release further details.
“The safety precautions currently in place are being implemented out of an abundance of caution to ensure the continued safety and well-being of all students and staff,” the sheriff’s office said in a public statement.
Both the school district and sheriff’s office said they are maintaining communication with appropriate authorities and thanked the community for its cooperation as they work to keep campuses safe.
