SAN ANGELO, TX — A GoFundMe has been launched to help Stephen Bright of San Angelo, who remains hospitalized in Virginia following major abdominal surgery and ongoing medical complications.
According to the fundraiser, Bright and his wife traveled with their two sons to Alexandria, Virginia, on October 12 to visit family. Two days later, Bright was taken to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain. He underwent major abdominal surgery on October 16 and continues to face setbacks in his recovery.
As of October 26, Bright has been unable to eat solid food for two weeks and remains hospitalized while his medical team monitors complications. Doctors hope the issue will resolve without another procedure, but additional surgery may be necessary.
The family has now spent three weeks in Virginia, with no clear timeline for returning home to San Angelo. The situation has placed a financial strain on the family due to medical expenses and loss of income.
For the past decade, Bright has owned and operated Semper Fresh Kettle Corn, a San Angelo-based food truck. October is typically the busiest month for his business, but he has been forced to cancel more than 15 scheduled events this month. Bright also works at Goodfellow Air Force Base, maintaining dormitories, but has not been paid due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. His job is set to terminate completely at the beginning of December, the GoFundMe states.
"He has plans to start a new business, but this situation and recovery mean a much slower start for Stephen," information states.
Meanwhile, his wife, who works in the occupational department at Shannon Hospital, has been unable to work while staying by her husband’s side in Virginia, while also taking care of the kids.
The fundraiser asks the community to assist with medical and travel expenses, as well as lost income. As of Monday morning, the campaign had raised $4,395 toward its $7,500 goal.
