SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo ISD trustees approved two new TEA-approved innovative health-science courses last Tuesday for the 2026–2027 school year, adding Kinesiology I and Science of Nursing to the district’s high-school Career and Technology Education program.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Farrah Gomez said the district must act now because scheduling and student planning for future cohorts is underway.
“This request for approval of the innovative courses is for the 26–27 school year. It’s important that we point that out. We begin planning well in advance for cohorts of students,” Gomez said. “Currently, we have counselors advising. We have special program staff holding our committee meetings, and we have to get this information out in advance, or it creates additional work for staff.”
Gomez told trustees the new courses respond to local workforce needs.
“We have a growing demand from local employers for preparing students for health-science careers, and the addition of these courses directly impacts the needs of our community," she said.
According to the board agenda report, Kinesiology I introduces students to biomechanics, physiological functions of movement, and psychological and social aspects of athletic performance. Science of Nursing covers patient assessment, emergency roles, assistive devices, and nursing theory in care plans.
The courses will utilize existing instructional resources and certified staff, and additional materials will be funded through the district’s CTE budget.
Trustees voted unanimously to approve the additions.
