Texas Issues 756 Drilling Permits in October; San Angelo Area Logs 83

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 756 original drilling permits in October 2025, including 654 to drill new oil or gas wells, according to monthly data released Tuesday. The total also included six permits to re-enter plugged wells, 22 field transfers and 74 re-completion permits.

Of the original drilling permits, 112 were for oil wells, 50 for gas wells, 567 for oil-and-gas wells, 19 for injection wells, four for service wells and four classified as other permits.

Commission staff also processed 1,366 oil completions, 370 gas completions and 247 injection completions during the month.

In West Texas, the San Angelo area logged 83 new drilling permits and 89 new oil well completions, while the Midland district led the state with 332 new permits and 351 oil completions.

New oil and gas permits by district included:

• Midland: 332 permits, 351 oil completions, 82 gas completions

• San Angelo: 83 permits, 89 oil completions, 0 gas completions

• San Antonio: 65 permits, 41 oil completions, 31 gas completions

• Refugio: 53 permits, 46 oil completions, 26 gas completions

• Lubbock: 25 permits, 41 oil completions, 0 gas completions

• North Texas: 25 permits, 18 oil completions, 13 gas completions

Statewide, drillers completed 601 new oil wells and 211 new gas wells.
