San Angelo Fire Department Warns Against Fireworks

SAN ANGELO, TX — Fire departments across the Concho Valley are asking residents to use fireworks safely and responsibly Wednesday, Dec. 31, as New Year’s Eve celebrations take place, while reminding the public that fireworks are illegal within San Angelo city limits and up to 5,000 feet beyond.

The San Angelo Fire Department said possessing or using fireworks within that area is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $2,000. City ordinance also prohibits the use, possession, storage, sale or receipt of fireworks within those boundaries, and illegal fireworks may be seized and disposed of at the owner’s expense.

For those celebrating outside city limits, fire officials recommend igniting one firework at a time, and never throwing fireworks at people. Officials also warn against relighting duds and advise soaking unused or malfunctioning fireworks in water before disposal.

Additional safety guidance includes keeping a bucket of water or a hose nearby, never experimenting with or making homemade fireworks, and avoiding the use of fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Children should always be supervised, even when using sparklers, and fireworks should be kept away from small children.

Fire officials also caution against launching fireworks from metal or glass containers and recommend keeping pets indoors to protect them from loud noises.

The Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department echoed those reminders, encouraging adults only to handle fireworks, celebrate responsibly, and ensure a water source or fire extinguisher is nearby.

Fire departments urged residents to follow all safety instructions and celebrate responsibly to help prevent injuries and fires during the holiday.

Fireworks are being sold at several locations outside San Angelo city limits, including Bad Boyz Fireworks on U.S. 67, Renegade Fireworks near Apache Trail, Angelo Fireworks on Knickerbocker Road, and Mr. W Fireworks on U.S. 67.
