SAISD Board to Vote on Mandatory Daily Prayer Period

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting at 5:45 p.m. today in the board room of the administration building at 1621 University Ave. 

The board is scheduled to consider a resolution in response to Senate Bill 11, which requires school districts to designate time each school day for students and employees to pray and read the Bible or other religious texts. The administration recommends adopting a resolution stating that SAISD will require every campus to provide a period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious text as provided in Section 25.0823, Education Code. 

The board will also consider approval of Superintendent Christopher Moran’s contract and a resolution approving the sale of city-owned property to the district. 

Other action items include:

  • Consideration of bills, accounts and financial statements.
  • Awarding Bid No. 26-003 for McGill Phase II abatement.
  • An easement agreement for the Millsap Sewer Line.
  • A resolution addressing employee pay during emergency closures, including premium pay.
  • Approval to request sanctions on educator certificates for abandonment of contract.
  • Acceptance of donations.
  • Approval of minutes from the Jan. 12 pre-agenda workshop and Jan. 20 regular meeting.
  • Awarding Bid No. 25-015 for maintenance, transportation and miscellaneous supplies.
  • Awarding Bid No. 25-018 for curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Purchase of school buses.

The meeting will open with recognitions for Career and Technical Education Month, National School Counseling Week, and Love the Bus Month. Reagan Elementary students Kayvion Daye, Evelynee Sanchez, Kaylynn Daye, and Jesus Ponce will lead the pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags. Marci Menchaca, executive director at House of Faith, will deliver the invocation. 

Information items include a bond construction update, middle-of-year academic benchmarks, and a public hearing on the Texas Academic Performance Report. The board will also conduct a Finance and Audit Committee workshop covering bills and accounts, the monthly investment report, the tax collection report, and the purchasing report. 

Public comments will be heard, and the meeting will conclude with announcements of the next finance/pre-agenda workshop on March 9 and the regular board meeting on March 26.
