SAN ANGELO, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued a total of 752 original drilling permits in April 2026, including 661 to drill new oil or gas wells.
The remaining permits included six to re-enter plugged wellbores, six field transfers, 78 for re-completion and one reclass, according to statistics released May 8.
Commission staff processed 876 oil completions, 325 gas completions and 83 injection completions during the month.
The 661 new oil and gas well permits broke down as 140 oil, 59 gas, 506 oil and gas, 31 injection, one service and 15 other.
In the San Angelo area, operators received 71 permits to drill new oil and gas holes and completed 130 new oil wells. No new gas completions were reported in the district.
The Midland district led the state with 354 new drilling permits, 320 new oil completions and 70 new gas completions.
Other districts with notable activity included the San Antonio area with 56 permits, 26 new oil completions and 18 new gas completions; the Refugio area with 44 permits, 23 new oil completions and 18 new gas completions; and East Texas with 36 permits, three new oil completions and 24 new gas completions.
