Lake View High School Graduate Killed in Midland Mass Shooting

MIDLAND, TX — A 1982 graduate of Lake View High School in San Angelo was killed Friday morning in a mass shooting in Midland that left 10 others injured.

Edward Randall Scott, 62, a Midland city employee and longtime community member involved with local and regional softball organizations, was the only fatality, other than the shooter, who was gunned down by law enforcement.

The shooting occurred in the 4600 block of West Wall Street after police responded to reports of an active shooter around 8 a.m.

San Angelo City Council member Mary Coffey, who attended Lake View High School with Scott, confirmed the connection. “Ed Scott, the victim of the fatal shooting in Midland today, was a 1982 graduate of Lakeview HS. I went to school with him,” she stated. "He was a good guy and a friend to all."

City officials described Scott as “a loving father and husband and a good person all the way around” and asked the public to respect his family’s privacy.

“We lost one of our own,” a city statement said. “A member of the City of Midland family will not be coming home.”

The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal. He had been wanted since Wednesday night after allegedly firing at a Midland police officer during a traffic stop. Villarreal led officers on a chase, exited his vehicle armed with a rifle, and fired at an officer who returned fire before fleeing the scene.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said the community now faces “a lot more strain and stress and sorrow” in the aftermath of the violence. A chapel at Midland Memorial Hospital has been made available for those affected.

The hospital received nine victims from the shooting. Four underwent surgery and five were treated and released. One additional victim was transported to a hospital in Odessa. Authorities have not released the names of the surviving victims.

The motive remains under investigation.
