Breach May Expose Data of 3M+ Texas Hunting, Fishing License Holders

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reported that an unauthorized actor may have obtained personal information belonging to more than 3 million customers who bought hunting and fishing licenses.

The cybersecurity incident involved the department’s license system vendor and was detected by Texas Cyber Command, according to a notification posted on the agency’s website.

Driver license information, passport numbers if provided, email addresses, phone numbers and residential addresses may have been exposed. Social Security numbers, dates of birth and financial information, including credit card details, were not obtained. The department said there is no evidence that customers under age 18 were involved or that any specific group was targeted.

TPWD said it has identified and implemented additional security measures and is working closely with the vendor to strengthen access controls, add enhanced monitoring and implement further safeguards. License sales will continue on schedule for August and the next license year.

Affected customers are eligible for one year of free credit monitoring through Kroll. Customers can confirm eligibility and enroll by calling the dedicated call center at (844) 959-7123. The enrollment deadline is Sept. 14, 2026.

The call center is available from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday, to answer questions about the incident or the services offered.

As a precaution, the department advised customers to monitor their credit reports and financial statements for unauthorized activity and to notify their financial institution or credit bureau immediately if any suspicious activity is found. Customers may also freeze their credit with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at no cost or place a free one-year fraud alert by contacting any of the three bureaus.

The department urged customers to avoid clicking links or sharing personal details unless they are certain a request is legitimate.
