SAN ANGELO, TX - San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith was recognized Friday at the 2026 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Awards in Austin, receiving the public service award.
According to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, since being elected chief, Griffith has revamped the department in several areas through innovative practices and his forward-thinking approach.
As a result of his initiative, the department has expanded staffing, strengthened regional coordination, and secured significant modernization grants.
Chief Griffith formed a regional Narcotics Task Force in partnership with the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
He also established the Concho Valley Threat Assessment Team, a multiagency collaborative focused on the early identification, assessment, and intervention of individuals exhibiting concerning behavior.
"His emphasis on transparency, community trust, and collaboration has strengthened relationships between law enforcement and the citizens they serve, while fostering a culture of accountability within the department," information stated.
Some of the notable funding secured in his tenure includes a $2,000,000 COPS grant for 161 in-car radios, 206 handheld radios, and 135 rugged laptops, as well as another $2.4 million COPS grant for server/desktop upgrades, CJIS compliance, and e-ticketing infrastructure, among other grants.
