SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo State Park is within an infested zone for the New World screwworm, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials said Thursday, urging visitors to take precautions to protect animals and limit the pest’s spread.
Horses must be inspected before leaving the park. Visitors planning to bring horses should call park headquarters at (325) 494-4757 at least 24 hours in advance to learn about Texas Animal Health Commission requirements and schedule an inspection.
Pet owners are advised to check animals daily for cuts, wounds or signs of infestation. Anyone who sees wildlife, pets or livestock with unusual wounds or maggots should not move the animals.
Instead, report the location immediately:
- For pets or livestock, contact park staff or the Texas Animal Health Commission at (737) 900-7455.
- For wildlife, contact park staff or call (512) 389-4505.
The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on living tissue of warm-blooded animals.
