Plans to Rebuild Kids Kingdom With Splash Pad Underway

SAN ANGELO, TX — The City of San Angelo has plans underway to rebuild the Kids Kingdom playground.

The park, which was built 23 years ago along Veterans Memorial Drive, has shown signs of deteriorating wood posts in recent years.

A contract for the construction of a new park was approved last week at a City Council meeting.

The park will be redesigned and constructed by Leathers & Associates, the same company that built Kids Kingdom in 2003.  

Parks and Recreation Department Director Carl White said an agreement is being finalized with Leathers & Associates for the design process, which could take 4 to 6 months once it begins this fall or next spring.

Funds will then have to be acquired for the rebuild before it can begin. The new Kids Kingdom could potentially be in place by the end of next year.

White said estimates have the construction costing more than $1.2 million. The design is expected to include a splash pad.

White said the City of San Angelo has attempted to maintain the park over the years, but it has reached a point where it needs to be rebuilt.

Kids Kingdom, which sits across the Concho River from the San Angelo Visitor Center, is one of the city’s most popular parks with its wooden castle-like structures and has been the site of countless field trips over the years from schools around the Concho Valley.
